What BCBAs miss in Colorado
- Practicing or offering to practice without a license after the licensing date will be a class 2 misdemeanor unless an exemption applies.
- Licensees will need professional liability insurance in an amount the board sets, unless covered as a public employee.
- The same act has the Department of Human Services license ABA clinics. The licensing program is set to repeal September 1, 2031 unless renewed after sunset review.
Does Colorado license behavior analysts?
Colorado enacted behavior analyst licensing in 2026 (signed June 2, 2026). Starting July 1, 2028, practicing ABA will require a license from a new board. Applicants will need current certification, a fingerprint-based record check and liability insurance. Licenses are not being issued yet.

Does Colorado license assistant behavior analysts?
The act authorizes the board to license assistant behavior analysts, who must be supervised by a licensed behavior analyst and stay within a scope of practice the board sets by rule. Assistant licenses are not being issued yet.

Do behavior technicians need a Colorado credential?
The act does not license technicians. It does require Medicaid to pay ABA providers for services by technicians certified by a certifying entity, with a one-time grace period of at least 45 days while a new technician pursues certification, subject to federal approval.
