What BCBAs miss in Ohio

Does Ohio license behavior analysts?

Ohio's credential is called a certificate, but it works as a practice license: no one may practice ABA in Ohio without it, and unlicensed practice is a crime. Applicants show current BCBA certification, pass a criminal records check and demonstrate an understanding of Ohio law on behavioral health practice.

  • Licenses behavior analysts
  • Certified Ohio Behavior Analyst (certificate to practice)
  • Licensure law enacted 2013

Citation: Ohio Rev. Code ch. 4783

Can a BCBA licensed in another state get a Ohio license by endorsement?

The board issues the certificate under Ohio's universal recognition law to an applicant who holds a certificate or license in another state, or who has qualifying work experience or certification in a state that does not license behavior analysts.

  • Endorsement or reciprocity route

Citation: Ohio Rev. Code § 4783.04(C); ch. 4796

Does Ohio have a state law exam or requirement?

The law requires every applicant to demonstrate an understanding of the law regarding behavioral health practice in Ohio, on top of BCBA certification. The board sets how that is shown.

  • State law exam or requirement

Does Ohio license assistant behavior analysts?

Ohio has no assistant credential. BCaBAs practice under the exemption for anyone supervised by a certified Ohio behavior analyst and acting under that analyst's authority and direction.

  • No assistant credential

Do behavior technicians need a Ohio credential?

No technician credential. RBTs work under the same exemption for people supervised by a certified Ohio behavior analyst, and direct care providers or family members may deliver parts of a treatment plan.

  • No technician credential

Telehealth and Ohio

A certified Ohio behavior analyst may provide telehealth services under Ohio's general telehealth statute.

How often does a Ohio behavior analyst license renew?

Certificate holders register by August 31 of each even-numbered year and pay a $150 biennial fee. Each renewal needs at least 23 hours of CE, including 4 in ethics, professional conduct or cultural competency, from BACB-approved or board-approved providers.

  • Renews every 2 years
  • 23 CE hours per cycle
