Keeping Several ABA License Renewals on One Calendar

A behavior analyst licensed in four states can face renewals on a birthday, a birth month in odd years, a fixed date in even years and an anniversary every year, plus the BACB's own date. Here are the renewal rules for nine states and the BACB, and a simple way to build one calendar from them.

Renewal rules differ: Washington renews every two years on your birthday, Virginia in your birth month in odd years, Ohio by August 31 of even years, Illinois on October 31 of odd years, Nevada by January 1 of odd years, Oregon and Louisiana every year. Add the BACB recertification date with an earlier reminder, since most states check it.

Renewal dates are where multi-state behavior analysts lose licenses without meaning to. Each board picks its own rule, and some of those rules are tied to you (your birthday, your license anniversary) rather than to a calendar date. Build the calendar once, from the rules below, and most of the risk goes away.

When does each state renew?

These are the rules in the sources named, as of October 2026.

  • Washington: every two years on or before your birthday. An initial credential issued within 90 days of your birthday runs to the following birthday (Department of Health FAQ; WAC 246-805-990). Late renewals pay a penalty.
  • Virginia: every two years, in your birth month, in odd-numbered years. The license lapses on the first day of the following month if not renewed (18VAC85-150-40 and 70). Next cycle: 2027.
  • Ohio: register by August 31 of each even-numbered year (Ohio Rev. Code 4783.05). The most recent deadline was August 31, 2026; the next is August 31, 2028.
  • Illinois: all behavior analyst licenses expire October 31 of odd-numbered years; the first period may be under two years (IDFPR). Next: October 31, 2027. Renewal opens in the 60 days before expiration (225 ILCS 6/50).
  • Nevada: renew on or before January 1 of each odd-numbered year (NRS 641D.360). The board says all licenses and registrations expire December 31, 2026, with online renewal available from October 5, 2026. Unpaid renewals are automatically suspended 60 days after the due date (NRS 641D.370).
  • Texas: licenses are valid two years from issuance (TDLR), so the date is personal to you.
  • Oregon: every year (OAR 824-050-0010). CE is counted per licensure year, starting on the day of the month you were first licensed (OAR 824-070-0005).
  • Louisiana: every year, by July 1. The renewal period opens in May and closes June 30; an unrenewed license lapses July 1 (board rules 401 and 402). Registered line technicians are renewed by the supervising LBA on the same schedule.
  • New York: separate from the license renewal, licensed behavior analysts and certified assistants must complete updated child abuse mandated reporter training by November 17, 2026 (Office of the Professions).

Where does the BACB date go?

On the same calendar, with an earlier reminder. Your BACB recertification date is two years from your last one, and the application opens 45 days before it (BCBA Handbook). Because Texas and Nevada require current certification to renew, and Washington accepts maintained certification as CE, a missed BACB date can stall state renewals that come after it. RBTs recertify every two years since January 1, 2026.

How do you build one calendar from all of this?

  1. List every credential: BACB certification and each state license, plus any technician registrations you supervise.
  2. Convert each rule to a real date for the next four years. Birthday and birth-month rules become fixed dates for you; anniversary rules come from your license certificate.
  3. Add the CE window for each. Oregon's annual year, Louisiana's reporting period, Virginia's biennium, the BACB cycle.
  4. Add state-only items: Texas's human trafficking course, Nevada's suicide prevention and cultural competency hours, Washington's health equity CE every four years, New York's mandated reporter update.
  5. Set reminders 90 and 30 days out. Ninety days leaves time to finish CE; thirty days leaves time to fix a portal problem.
  6. Keep contact details current. Washington says renewal notices are a courtesy and you must renew "with or without a renewal notice." The BACB asks for personal information updates within 30 days.

Which technician and assistant dates belong on the same calendar?

Supervisors often track their own licenses and forget the people they supervise. Washington CBTs and LABAs renew every two years on their birthdays. Nevada RBT registrations follow the same January 1 odd-year cycle as licenses, with a new background check at every third renewal (NRS 641D.360). Oregon interventionists renew every year. Louisiana line technician registrations are renewed by the supervising LBA by July 1 each year (board rule 401). The BACB recertifies RBTs every two years. An agency calendar should carry all of them.

Which dates are coming up soonest?

As of October 2026: Nevada's December 31, 2026 expiration for every license and registration; New York's November 17, 2026 training deadline; Louisiana's next renewal window in May and June 2027; Illinois on October 31, 2027; and Virginia's odd-year birth-month renewals throughout 2027.

Can we keep the calendar for you?

Yes. Our Annual Renewal and CE Compliance service is $299 per license, per year. We build and maintain the calendar for your BACB date and every license, send reminders, check CE against each state's rules, and prepare each renewal for you to review and submit. Agencies can track a whole roster this way; see licensing compliance for ABA agencies. Related: BACB recertification and state renewal and reinstating a lapsed license.
