BACB Recertification and State License Renewal

Recertifying with the BACB does not renew a single state license, and renewing a state license does not recertify you. They are two systems on two calendars. But most states check your BACB status at renewal, so a missed recertification can stop a license renewal too.

BACB recertification and state license renewal are separate: recertifying does not renew any state license, and renewing a license does not recertify you. But most states check BACB status at renewal. Texas will not renew an active license on an inactive certification, and Nevada requires certification in good standing, so a missed BACB date can block state renewals.

A BCBA with three state licenses has four renewal dates, not one. The BACB's recertification keeps your certification. Each state's renewal keeps that state's license. Neither substitutes for the other: when you recertify with the BACB, no state is notified that your license should renew, and when you renew in Texas, the BACB does not move your recertification date.

They are connected in one direction, though. Most states check your BACB status when you renew, so the BACB date is the one that can take down everything else.

How does BACB recertification work?

From the BCBA Handbook (updated June 2026):

  • Recertification is every two years. The application opens in your BACB portal 45 days before your recertification date, and you can submit only after entering enough CEUs.
  • The fee is $215 ($290 for BCBA-D). The application asks about health conditions, investigations and disciplinary actions; a yes triggers an ethics self-report review that holds the application.
  • CEUs may be audited. If documentation is missing, the certification expires.
  • If you miss the date, your certification becomes inactive and you may not bill, practice, supervise or represent yourself as a BCBA. If your CEUs were done, you have 30 days to reinstate with a $50 late fee. After that, it expires.

BCaBAs follow a similar cycle with a $140 fee and 20 CEUs. RBTs moved to two-year recertification on January 1, 2026, with 12 hours of professional development per cycle.

How do states tie renewal to the BACB?

  • Texas: "Before you may renew a state of Texas license, you must have a valid, current, and active certification." An inactive certification lets you renew only an inactive Texas license (TDLR).
  • Nevada: renewal requires evidence that your BACB certification "remains valid and the holder remains in good standing" (NRS 641D.360).
  • Washington: one way to meet the CE requirement is maintaining certification with an approved credentialing entity (WAC 246-805-401); a technician can meet continuing competency by maintaining RBT certification (WAC 246-805-410).
  • Virginia: you attest to 32 hours of CE approved by a BACB-recognized sponsor; the license rests on current BCBA certification (18VAC85-150-60 and 100).

The BACB's regulatory brief says 14 of the 40 licensing states meet CE by requiring continued certification. In those states, the BACB date effectively becomes a license condition.

Why don't the dates line up?

Because each state sets its own. Washington renews every two years on your birthday. Virginia renews in your birth month in odd-numbered years. Ohio registers by August 31 of even-numbered years. Illinois licenses expire October 31 of odd-numbered years. Nevada licenses renew by January 1 of odd-numbered years, and the board says all current licenses expire December 31, 2026. Texas licenses run two years from issuance. Oregon and Louisiana renew every year. The BACB's date is two years from your last recertification. Our renewal calendar post lays these out.

Can you go inactive with the BACB and keep a state license?

Sometimes, but plan it with each state. The BACB's voluntary inactive status lasts up to four years for a $50 fee, and you must have completed CE prorated to the month you go inactive; while inactive you may not practice, bill or supervise as a BCBA (BCBA Handbook). Texas lets an inactive certificant renew only an inactive Texas license. Virginia and Nevada offer their own inactive license status, with reactivation conditions (18VAC85-150-80 and 90; NAC 641D.180). Matching the two statuses avoids a license that is active on paper while the certification behind it is not.

What goes wrong most often?

  1. The BACB lapses first. A missed recertification makes you inactive at once. In Texas that blocks an active renewal; in a state whose license rests on current certification, you may be practicing on a license whose foundation is gone.
  2. CEUs that fit one cycle but not another. BACB CEUs must fall inside the BACB cycle. Oregon counts per licensure year; Louisiana per reporting period. A course can count for both only if it falls in both windows.
  3. State-only requirements. The BACB does not track Texas's human trafficking course, Nevada's suicide prevention hours or Washington's health equity CE.
  4. The 180-day rule. A new BCBA's RBT or BCaBA certification ends 180 days after passing the BCBA exam. A technician registration or assistant license tied to it needs replacing in time; see what happens to your RBT or BCaBA.

Is there a simpler way to keep both on track?

Our Annual Renewal and CE Compliance service ($299 per license, per year) puts your BACB date and every state date on one schedule, checks CEUs against each set of rules, reminds you before each window opens, and prepares state renewal paperwork for you to review and submit. We do not recertify you with the BACB; that application is yours, in your own portal. See also CE requirements across states and BACB certification versus a state license.

Common questions

Does recertifying with the BACB renew my state license?
No. The BACB and each state run separate renewals with separate fees and dates. You recertify with the BACB in your portal and renew each state license with that state's board.
What happens to my state license if my BACB certification lapses?
It depends on the state, but it is rarely harmless. Texas will not renew an active license with an inactive certification, and Nevada renewal requires certification in good standing. In states where the license rests on current certification, a lapse can affect eligibility.
When can I submit my BACB recertification?
The application opens in your BACB portal 45 days before your recertification date, and you can submit only after entering enough CEUs. If you miss the date, you have 30 days to reinstate with a $50 late fee if your CEUs were complete.
Can one CE course count for both the BACB and my state?
Often, if the course falls inside both cycles and meets both sets of rules. Oregon counts CE per licensure year and Louisiana per reporting period, so timing matters as much as the topic.
