Arkansas credentials behavior analysts through a registration with the Arkansas Psychology Board. You need current BCBA, BCBA-D or QABA QBA certification, the ability to practice independently, and a state and federal background check. Request an application by email, mail the full packet with a cover letter, and submit by the first of the month for that month's board meeting.
The BACB's licensure table lists Arkansas with 2025 as its year, overseen by the Arkansas Psychology Board. What the board actually issues is a behavior analyst registration. Its applicant page is titled "Arkansas Psychology Board Behavior Analyst Registration Steps," and it points to the board's rules and to Chapter 97 of the Arkansas Code. For a BCBA, the practical effect is the same as a license: you need the Arkansas credential before practicing there, and it comes with a background check, a renewal cycle and board oversight. The paperwork, though, is unusually manual.
Who is eligible?
Step 1 on the board's page lists three conditions:
- "You must hold current certification as BCBA, BCBA-D, or Qualified Behavior Analyst (QBA)," issued by the BACB or the Qualified Applied Behavior Analysis Credentialing Board.
- You "must be able to practice independently."
- You "must be able to pass a criminal background check (state and federal)."
The independence requirement matters for assistants. The registration is built for practitioners certified to work independently; the board's page describes no separate registration for BCaBAs. See which states license assistant behavior analysts.
How does the application work?
Arkansas runs on paper and email:
- Application request. Download the application request form and email it to APB.INFO@ARKANSAS.GOV. The office replies with a registration number you use to pay the application fee online. You can instead mail a check or money order with the request form.
- Application packet. Complete the Behavior Analyst Registration Application and "include a cover letter explaining what services you will be providing, ages that you will be providing services to." The board asks applicants to mail the entire packet because "we must keep the originals." Include your BACB or QABA certification.
- Background check. Out-of-state applicants must wait for the board to mail the packet, because "it includes the fingerprint card," and the board warns that "out of state applicants take longer to process with Arkansas State Police."
- Board review. The board reviews the file, verifies certification and issues the registration. "Please have all documentation submitted to the board office by the first of every month to make sure you are placed on the agenda for the board meeting that month."
The board is blunt about incomplete files: they "will not be reviewed by the Board, and it is the responsibility of the applicant to make sure everything is filled out correctly." A missing page can cost a full month. Registration is valid for two years.
Is there reciprocity?
Yes. The board's reciprocity registration requires that you be "currently licensed in another jurisdiction with comparable requirements" and hold BACB or QABA certification. You submit the application request, pay after the confirmation email, mail the complete application, and arrange verification of licensure and certification that "must come directly from that jurisdiction," which may be emailed to the board. You must also meet all the Step 1 eligibility requirements, including the background check. See BCBA license by endorsement and license verifications for behavior analysts.
What about short-term work in Arkansas?
Arkansas offers a temporary registration with a maximum of 30 days. The applicant must hold certification or licensure in another jurisdiction (BCBA, BCBA-D or QBA), be in good standing with verification sent directly from that jurisdiction, submit the application request and mailed application, pay the fee, and "provide evidence that practice in Arkansas will be short-term (maximum 30 days per calendar year)." The key line: the "board must verify and vote on your application before services can begin." Because the board acts at its monthly meetings, a temporary registration needs planning weeks ahead, not days. Compare temporary practice rules in other states.
What should you plan for?
- The first-of-the-month cutoff. Work backward from the meeting you want to make.
- Mail time. The packet goes in by mail, and for out-of-state applicants the fingerprint card comes out by mail first.
- A clear cover letter. Describe the services, settings and ages you will serve. It is part of the application, not a courtesy.
- Certification status. Eligibility depends on current BCBA, BCBA-D or QBA certification, so keep it active through review and renewal.
How do we help with an Arkansas registration?
We prepare, organize and track: the application request, the packet and cover letter drafted for your review, the fingerprint card timing, the direct verifications from your other states and the meeting calendar. You review, sign and mail the application yourself. The BACB has warned that letting another person or entity complete a licensure application on your behalf "may be a violation of state law."
Our License by Endorsement service ($599 per state) covers reciprocity files, and the Full State License Application ($749 per state) covers a first state credential. Board and State Police fees are separate. See pricing and the Arkansas state page.
Common questions
- Is Arkansas's behavior analyst credential a license or a registration?
- The Arkansas Psychology Board calls it a behavior analyst registration. The BACB counts Arkansas among licensing states, and the registration is required to practice there.
- Can I practice in Arkansas for a few weeks without registering?
- Not without a temporary registration. It covers a maximum of 30 days per calendar year, and the board must verify and vote on it before services begin.
- Why does my Arkansas application take longer from out of state?
- The board mails out-of-state applicants a packet containing the fingerprint card, and it warns that out-of-state applicants take longer to process with the Arkansas State Police.
- When does the Arkansas Psychology Board review behavior analyst files?
- At its monthly meetings. The board asks for all documentation by the first of the month to be placed on that month's agenda.
