On January 1, 2027 the BACB discontinues BCBA eligibility Pathways 3 and 4; applicants using them must submit an approvable application by December 31, 2026. Pathway 2 coursework moves to a 315-hour standard, concentrated fieldwork supervision becomes 7.5%, and BCBAs who supervise need 4 supervision CEUs per cycle. Pathway 1 becomes the only route in 2032.
The BACB has been announcing its 2027 BCBA requirements since its March 2022 newsletter, and they take effect on January 1, 2027. The headline change is that two of the four eligibility pathways close. The BACB's December 2025 newsletter is specific: "Starting January 1, 2027: Eligibility pathways 3 and 4 will no longer be available. If you want to apply under one of these pathways, you must submit an approvable application by December 31, 2026."
The rest of the changes affect everyone applying through Pathways 1 and 2 from 2027 on, and every BCBA who supervises.
Who uses Pathways 3 and 4 today?
They are the routes for experienced people who did not come through a behavior analysis degree or coursework sequence. Under the current BCBA Handbook (updated 06/2026):
- Pathway 3, Faculty Teaching and Research, requires a master's degree or higher, at least three cumulative years of full-time faculty work in behavior analysis within a five-year period (including teaching at least five sections of graduate behavior-analytic coursework across at least two content areas), a qualifying published research article, and supervised fieldwork.
- Pathway 4, Postdoctoral Experience, requires a doctoral degree conferred at least 10 years ago, 10 years of full-time postdoctoral experience practicing behavior analysis under a state or provincial license or national professional credential, and 500 hours of supervised fieldwork.
If either describes you, December 31, 2026 is the date to plan around, and "approvable" means complete, not started.
What do Pathways 1 and 2 look like from 2027?
The BACB's 2027 BCBA Requirements document (updated 02/2026) describes the two remaining routes.
Pathway 1: accredited or recognized program
A master's degree from an APBA-accredited program, or a master's or doctoral degree earned in 2015 or later from a program accredited or recognized by ABAI under Tier 1, 2a or 2b, while the program held that status. Supervised fieldwork and the exam are still required.
Pathway 2: behavior-analytic coursework
A master's degree or higher in any field, but not one earned in less than one calendar year (three consecutive primary semesters, four consecutive quarters, or 12 consecutive months). The coursework must:
- come from a program with a qualified Pathway 2 Program Contact registered with the BACB;
- be completed at the master's or doctoral level, for academic credit, with a C or better or a pass;
- be completed within 10 years of the application year;
- take at least one calendar year in total; and
- total 315 instructional hours across six areas, each in freestanding courses: basic principles of behavior (45), theory and philosophy (45), research methods (45), behavior assessment and intervention (90, in two courses), organizational behavior management (45), and ethics (45).
Since January 1, 2026, every Pathway 2 application already needs a coursework attestation from the program's designated Pathway 2 Program Contact, following ABAI's discontinuation of its Verified Course Sequence system. From 2027, that attestation must show the 2027 coursework standard.
How does fieldwork change?
| Requirement | Supervised Fieldwork | Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork |
|---|---|---|
| Hours to qualify | 2,000 | 1,500 |
| Supervision per period (2027) | 5% of hours | 7.5% of hours (10% under the current handbook) |
| Fieldwork hours per period | Minimum 20, maximum 160 | |
| Observation with a client per period | 60 minutes cumulative | 90 minutes cumulative |
| Individual supervision | At least 50% of supervised hours | |
| Unrestricted activities | At least 60% of total fieldwork hours | |
Applicants after January 1, 2027 use the 2027 Monthly and Final Fieldwork Verification Forms, in individual-supervisor and multiple-supervisor versions. Supervisors still must be active BCBAs with no current disciplinary sanctions; a supervisor certified less than a year needs monthly consultation from a qualified consulting supervisor. The exam stays on the BCBA Test Content Outline (6th ed.), in use since January 1, 2025.
What changes for BCBAs who already hold the credential?
Maintenance changes too. From 2027, BCBAs must earn 32 CEUs per two-year recertification cycle, including 4 in ethics and, for supervisors, 4 in supervision. The current handbook requires 3 supervision CEUs. The BACB expanded the definition of an ethics CEU in March 2025 to include events on cultural and contextual responsiveness, provided most of the event focuses on ethics or that topic.
If your state licenses on continued BACB certification, as 14 licensing states do for CE purposes per the BACB's Regulatory Brief, the extra supervision CEU matters to your state license as well. If your state sets its own CE, track both (see BACB recertification and state renewal).
Which later dates should you know about?
- January 1, 2028: Pathway 2 Program Contacts must be affiliated with an institution in a country within the BACB's jurisdiction.
- January 1, 2029: Pathway 1 applicants must hold a master's degree equivalent to a US master's degree, in addition to the accreditation requirement.
- January 1, 2032: Pathway 1, a degree from an accredited university program, becomes the only BCBA eligibility pathway.
Internationally, Ontario residents stopped being able to apply for BCBA certification in mid-2026, and Australia residents can no longer apply from January 1, 2027 (BACB Recent and Upcoming Changes).
Do the 2027 changes affect state licensing?
Indirectly. Most licensing states build the license on current BCBA certification, so a person certified under the 2027 rules qualifies the same way as anyone else. Texas, for instance, requires current BCBA certification and that the applicant "has met the educational requirements of the Board Certified Behavior Analyst standard" (Tex. Occ. Code 506.253). A few states also offer non-certification routes: New York's Pathway One requires a degree from a New York-registered or equivalent ABA program, documented experience and an exam. See getting a New York LBA license.
Where the change bites is fieldwork done across state lines. The BACB warns that a trainee whose fieldwork supervisor needed a state license may "experience barriers in obtaining a license in that jurisdiction." Fieldwork that meets the 2027 BACB standard can still create a state problem (see remote supervision across state lines).
Once you pass, we prepare the state license applications: $749 per state for a Full State License Application, or $199 for the New BCBA Credential Transition if you held an RBT or BCaBA. You review, sign and submit. See pricing.
