Yes, Nevada requires RBTs to register with the state Board of Applied Behavior Analysis before providing services (NRS 641D.100 and 641D.900). Registration requires current BACB RBT certification, a qualified supervisor, a fingerprint background check, three professional references and a $70 fee. Registrations renew by January 1 of odd-numbered years, and the current cycle ends December 31, 2026.
In Nevada, being an RBT is not enough to work. The state's applied behavior analysis law defines a "registered behavior technician" as a person who (1) is certified as an RBT by the BACB, (2) "is registered as such pursuant to this chapter," and (3) works under the supervision the chapter requires (NRS 641D.100). A person may not represent themselves as an RBT or engage in applied behavior analysis without the proper license or registration (NRS 641D.900), and practicing without it is a gross misdemeanor (NRS 641D.910).
The Nevada Applied Behavior Analysis Board puts it plainly on its licensing page: "Anyone practicing ABA in the State of Nevada, must complete this process PRIOR to providing services."
What does Nevada require for RBT registration?
- Current BACB RBT certification. The application must contain proof that the applicant is registered as an RBT by the BACB (NRS 641D.310(3)). By statute, the board "shall not require any additional education or training" for registration.
- A qualified supervisor. The applicant shows they will be supervised by a psychologist, behavior analyst or assistant behavior analyst who meets the BACB's supervisor requirements (NAC 641D.100(3)).
- Fingerprints. Each applicant arranges fingerprints at their own expense for a state and FBI background report (NRS 641D.300). The application is not considered complete until the prints or verification of electronic submission arrive.
- Three professional references. Nevada's regulation asks every applicant, including registrants, for three letters of professional reference attesting to competence, moral character and fitness (NAC 641D.100(1)(e)).
- A clean history. The applicant must not have been convicted of a crime listed in NRS 641D.700 or NAC 641D.600, and must not have disciplinary action or pending complaints before another licensing authority or the BACB (NAC 641D.100(1)).
What does it cost, and where is it filed?
The board's fee page lists a $70 RBT registration fee, due when the application is made and nonrefundable, plus an optional $25 paper copy. For the background check, the board says LiveScan "is $40.00 plus the fee charged by the vendor," results come back in about 10 to 14 days, and LiveScan is not available outside Nevada; out-of-state applicants follow a different process in the application. The board warns that background results received before an application is started are destroyed, and the applicant has to be printed again.
As of early October 2026 the board says it has moved off its previous platform, no longer accepts RBT paper applications, and is opening online RBT applications. Check the board site for the current link before starting.
When do Nevada registrations renew?
By statute, licenses and registrations renew on or before January 1 of each odd-numbered year (NRS 641D.360). The board's notice says "All Nevada ABA licenses and registrations expire 12-31-2026," and online renewals open October 5, 2026. RBT renewal is $70 under NAC 641D.200.
Two renewal details are specific to technicians. Nevada may not require continuing education for RBTs (NRS 641D.360(4)), but renewal requires evidence that the BACB certification remains valid and in good standing. And on the third renewal, and every third renewal after that, the registrant must go through a new criminal history check (NRS 641D.360(2)).
A registration whose fee is not paid within 60 days after it is due is automatically suspended. The board may reinstate it within two years on payment of the renewal and restoration fees; after that, the board must also find the person competent to practice (NRS 641D.370).
Who may supervise a Nevada RBT?
NRS 641D.610(2) allows three kinds of supervisor: a licensed psychologist who holds BCBA certification and meets the BACB's supervisor requirements; a licensed behavior analyst who meets them; or a licensed assistant behavior analyst who meets them. Supervisors must follow the BACB's supervision requirements, which Nevada adopts by reference (NAC 641D.090), and keep supervision documentation for at least seven years (NAC 641D.300). Under the BACB's RBT Handbook, that means at least 5 percent of service hours each calendar month and at least two face-to-face, real-time contacts.
What should agencies watch?
- Hire date versus registration date. The technician cannot provide services until registered, and the background check alone takes about two weeks.
- The BACB credential. If an RBT's BACB certification lapses, Nevada renewal fails. The BACB moved RBT recertification to every two years on January 1, 2026.
- Disciplinary grounds that reach employers. NAC 641D.600 lets the board act against a licensee who employs, in an ABA business, a person convicted of crimes on its list.
- Supervisors licensed in Nevada. The supervisor categories in NRS 641D.610 are Nevada licensees.
Can we handle the paperwork for an agency?
Our Behavior Technician Registration service is $149 per technician. We confirm the supervisor details, collect references, schedule the LiveScan or out-of-state fingerprint process at the right moment, prepare the application for the technician to review and submit, and track it to approval. Board and fingerprint fees are separate. For the supervising analysts, Nevada also requires its own jurisprudence exam; see Nevada's state page and state law exams for behavior analysts. Common questions
- Do I need to register as an RBT in Nevada if I'm already BACB certified?
- Yes. Nevada defines a registered behavior technician as someone who is both BACB certified and registered under state law, and practicing without the registration is a gross misdemeanor under NRS 641D.910.
- How long does the Nevada background check take?
- The Nevada ABA Board says LiveScan results return directly to the board in approximately 10 to 14 days. LiveScan is not available outside Nevada, so out-of-state applicants follow a different process described in the application.
- Do Nevada RBTs need continuing education for renewal?
- No. NRS 641D.360 bars the board from requiring continuing education for registered behavior technicians. Renewal does require proof that BACB certification is valid and in good standing, and a new criminal history check at the third renewal and every third one after.
- Who can supervise an RBT in Nevada?
- A Nevada licensed behavior analyst, a licensed assistant behavior analyst, or a licensed psychologist with BCBA certification, each meeting the BACB's supervisor requirements, under NRS 641D.610.
